Red Drums are one of the most recreational south fish throughout the South Atlantic. Red drums are a dark red color on the back, which fades into white on the belly, with a special spot near the tail. They derive their name from their color and their croaking, or “drumming”, sound when in distress.

Binomial name: Sciaenops ocellatus
Common names: red fish, puppy drum, spot tail, bull red, channel bass, red bass, tropical sea bass

Cousin of the red drum, black drum are usually found between 5 to 30 pound ranges. They are often black and/or gray in color with dark stripes with rounded teeth and powerful jaws. They are usually found in or near brackish waters. It is recommended those over 15 pounds to be released.

Southern flounder are demersal fish found at the bottom of oceans around the world. They are the group of flatfish species. They ambush their prey, in soft muddy areas of the sea bottom, near bridge piles, docks, and coral reefs. Both of their eyes are on one side of their head.

Binomial name: Paralichthys lethostigma
Common Names: mud flounder, doormat, halibut, flatfish
South Carolina State Record: 17 pounds, 6 ounces (1974)

Sheepshead are marine fish that grows to 30in, but more commonly reaches 10-20in. Sheepshead are typically grey with 5-6 black stripes. Their dorsal spines are sharp; along with their hard mouth, with several rows of stubby teeth. They feed on oysters, clams, fiddler crabs, and other crustaceans.

Binomial name: Archosargus probatocephalus
Common Names: sheepshead bream, convict fish, sheepshead porgie
South Carolina State Record: 16 pounds, 6 ounces (2008)

Spotted seatrout are a common estuarine fish found in the southern US coasts from Maryland to Florida. Most of these fish are caught on shallow, grassy flats, in which they reside in virtually any inshore water. Seatrout have prominent canine teeth. It has a elongated, soft dorsal fin with no scales. Seatrout feed on large amounts of shrimp and as they grow larger their diets shift towards fish. They are a prized food fish.
